Recommended fluids

FluidGradeStandardAmbientCapacityNotes
CoolantEthylene glycol base anti-freeze mixed with waterDo NOT use straight 100% ethylene glycol. Normal mixture approximately 50% anti-freeze and 50% water; ratio varies with ambient temperature.
Engine oilAPI SE or SE/CCAPIUse low ash content oils .03-.85 percent by weight with natural gas or propane fueled engines. See SAE viscosity grades chart.
FuelASTM 2-D or 1-D diesel fuelCetane number 45Use Number 1-D diesel fuel when ambient temperatures are below 32 F (0 C) or during long periods of light load/cyclic operation.
FuelUnleaded or regular grade gasolineUse regular gasoline for first 25 hours to allow rings to seat; then use unleaded. Do not use highly leaded premium fuels.

Procedures

12
Adjust anti-dieseling solenoid adjustment
  1. With set stopped, turn lever counterclockwise; set screw so plates are closed but not binding.
  2. Check lever has approximately 30 degrees travel counterclockwise from vertical.
  3. Start set; lever should rotate approximately 60 degrees clockwise from stopped position.
  4. Check solenoid plunger is fully seated.
  5. If not, adjust distance between plunger and lever arm; repeat steps.
Carburetor Adjustments adjustment

⚠ Forcing needle against seat will damage it.

Tools: Carburetor adjusting wrench 420-0294 or 420-0169

  1. Allow engine to reach normal operating temperature before adjustments.
  2. Idle Jet Adjustment: With no load, move speed control to SLOW. Turn idle jet needle out until engine loses speed, then in until runs smooth.
  3. Throttle Stop Adjustment: Adjust screw so throttle maintains 1/32 inch from manifold.
  4. Main Jet Adjustment: Apply full load. Grasp governor mechanism to minimum speed. Release and observe acceleration. If uneven, turn main adjustment out 1/4 turn. Do not open needle more than 1/2 turn b
Carburetor adjustment for 6.5 NH RV adjustment
  1. Turn idle mixture screw out 3/4 to 1 turn from seated.
  2. Turn main mixture screw 1-1/2 to 1-3/4 turns out from seated.
  3. Start set; adjust governor spring for 1860 RPM no load (62 Hz or 130 volts).
  4. Hold governor arm so throttle lever rests on stop; adjust idle stop screw to 1500 RPM (50 Hz or 100 volts); release.
  5. Adjust idle mixture screw to highest RPM or voltage; readjust governor spring to 1860 RPM no load.
  6. Apply full load; adjust main mixture screw to highest RPM or voltage; readjust governor spring to 1770 RPM full load.
  7. Remove and add load several times to check hunting; readjust governor spring if required.
Check Valve Clearance adjustment

Tools: Feeler gauge, Valve tappet adjusting wrench 420-0139

  1. Set valve clearance to .003" on intake and .012" on exhaust.
  2. Place one cylinder on compression stroke and adjust those valves.
  3. Turn crankshaft one full turn placing other cylinder on compression and adjust its valves.
Float Level Adjustments adjustment
  1. Measure float setting at bowl flange.
  2. For downdraft carburetors, dimension should be 1/4 inch.
  3. For LUA carburetors, measure float setting as indicated.
Governor Adjustments adjustment

Tools: Tachometer

  1. Make governor adjustments concurrent with carburetor adjustments.
  2. Linkage Adjustment: Adjust length so with engine stopped and tension on governor spring, stop on carburetor throttle lever is 1/32 inch from carburetor stop boss.
  3. Speed Adjustment: Check speed with tachometer. Turn speed adjusting nut IN to increase speed or OUT to decrease.
  4. Sensitivity Adjustment: Move spring toward governor shaft to increase sensitivity; toward linkage end to decrease.
  5. Low Speed Stop Adjustment: Set screw for approximately 50 to 100 rpm above throttle stop screw setting. Preferred speed is 1000 rpm.
Set Point Gap adjustment

Tools: Feeler gauge

  1. Rotate engine crankshaft clockwise until maximum breaker point gap is obtained.
  2. Turn cam screw until proper point gap is measured with a feeler gauge.
  3. Wipe gauge before measuring to remove oil or foreign material.
Check symmetrical firing of rectifier bridge 305-0524 diagnostic

Tools: Simpson 260 meter, diode 357-0014 or 357-0004

  1. Run unit at no load. Use Simpson 260 on 2.5 VDC positive scale.
  2. Connect positive meter lead to plus terminal on 305-0524 module.
  3. Connect negative lead to anode of diode 357-0014 or 357-0004; connect cathode to AC1 and record reading.
  4. Move cathode to AC2 and record reading. Stop engine.
  5. Reverse secondary leads X1 and X2 of transformer T21 at positions 9 and 10 on regulator board.
  6. Start engine and repeat readings.
  7. Connect T21 secondary leads to positions giving least voltage difference.
Field flashing to restore AC output diagnostic

Tools: field flashing tool

  1. Flash the field.
  2. Check capacitor C1; replace if suspected defective.
  3. Check diodes CR1 and CR2; replace if defective.
  4. If still no output, refer to Generator and Controls Master Service Manual section 6.
Apply RTV sealant to cylinder head gasket 110-1852 maintenance

Tools: White RTV sealant

  1. Apply White RTV sealant bead .03-.06 thick on both sides of head gasket.
  2. Alternatively apply RTV to finished block surface and one side of gasket.
  3. Install gasket before RTV hardens.
  4. Allow minimum cure time one hour before operating engine.
  5. Water or water vapor accelerates curing.
Break-In Procedure maintenance

⚠ Using wrong grade and weight of oil can cause high engine operating temperatures during break-in causing engine damage.

  1. Run engine at half load for first three hours with intermittent periods of full load.
  2. Check oil level at least every five operating hours.
  3. Add oil to keep at proper level; never overfill as overfilling may cause oil to foam and enter breather system.
Clean external oil lines and restricted fittings maintenance

⚠ Do NOT enlarge orifice or substitute fittings.

Tools: #70 drill (.028), #56 drill (.046), low pressure compressed air

  1. Remove and clean oil lines and passages with low pressure compressed air during major service.
  2. Single cylinder: clean restricted fitting at cylinder head oil line with #70 drill (.028).
  3. Clean low oil pressure switch tee with #70 drill (.028).
  4. Two cylinder: clean cylinder head fitting with #70 drill; clean tee between oil filter adapter and injection pump pad with #56 drill (.046).
  5. Four cylinder: clean each cylinder head fitting with #70 drill; clean connector coupling with #56 drill (.046).
  6. Blow all lines and fittings clean before installation.
