Common problems

  • The FAULT 1 or FAULT 2 fault lamp lights.
    Fix: Engine shuts down immediately, engine runs for several seconds and then shuts down, or engine continues to run. The standard undesignated fault functions are programmed to shut down the set when a fault is sensed. Fault 1 is timed delayed while Fault 2 is immediate. The nature of the fault is an optional selection that is determined when the set installation is designed. The undesignated fault functions may also be programmed for non-shutdown or non-time delay.
  • SWITCH OFF lamp flashes.
    Fix: Indicates Run-Stop-Remote switch is in the Stop position which will prevent automatic Starting. Moving the Run-Stop-Remote switch to the Remote position will stop the lamp flashing and enable automatic starting.
  • PRELO OIL PRES lamp lights. Engine continues to operate. PRELO OIL PRES
    Fix: Indicates engine oil pressure has dropped to 20 psi (138 kPa). If generator is powering critical loads and cannot be shut down, wait until next shutdown period and then follow step 5 procedure. If engine can be stopped, follow procedure in step 5.
  • PRE HI ENGINE TEMP lamp lights. Engine continues to operate. PRE HI ENGINE TEMP
    Fix: Indicates engine has begun to overheat and engine temperature has risen to approximately 205° F (97°C). If generator is powering non-critical and critical loads, and cannot be shut down, use the following: a. Reduce load if possible by turning off non-Critical loads. b. Check air inlets and outlets and remove any obstructions to airflow. c. Open doors or windows in generator area to increase ventilation. If engine can be stopped, follow procedure in step 3.
  • OVERCRANK lamp lights and engine stops cranking.
    Fix: - a. Check for empty fuel tank, fuel leaks, or plugged fuel lines and correct as required. b. Check for dirty fuel filter and replace if necessary (see MAINTENANCE section). c. Check for dirty or plugged air filter and replace if necessary (see MAINTENANCE section. Refer to step 5. e. Reset the control and restart after correcting the problem. Contact your distributor for service if none of the above applies.
  • No AC output voltage.
    Fix: Voltage regulator is inoperative. Refer to Initial Start and Checks, and Adjustments sections of your Installation Manual for voltage check and adjustment procedures. Contact your distributor if voltage build-up is still a problem.
  • LO OIL PRES lamp lights. Engine shuts down. LO OIL PRES
    Fix: Indicates engine oil pressure has dropped to 14 psi (97 kPa). Check oil level, replenish as necessary. Check oil lines and filters for leaks, repair as required. Reset control and restart. Contact your distributor if oil pressure is not in the range of 50 to 70 psi (345 to 483 kPa).
  • LO FUEL lamp lights. Engine shuts down and LO OIL PRES lamp lights. LO FUEL
    Fix: Indicates engine has run out of fuel. Check fuel level and replenish as required.
  • LO FUEL lamp lights. Engine continues to run. LO FUEL
    Fix: Indicates diesel fuel supply is running low. Check fuel supply and replenish as required.
  • LO ENG TEMP lamp lights. Set is in standby mode but is not operating.
    Fix: (Lamp lights when engine coolant: temperature is 70° F (21° C) or lower. Since the lamp goes out after the engine warms up, there should be no cause for alarm if it remains lighted during initial generator set operation.)
  • LO ENG TEMP lamp lights.
    Fix: Indicates engine coolant heater is not operating or is not circulating coolant. Check for the following conditions: a. Coolant heater not connected to power supply. Check for blown fuse or disconnected heater cord and correct as required. b. Check for low coolant level and replenish if required. Look for possible coolant leakage points and repair as required. c. Contact your distributor if none of the above applies.
  • HI ENG TEMP lamp lights. Engine shuts down. HI ENG TEMP
    Fix: Indicates engine has overheated (engine temperature has risen above 215° F/102° C) or coolant level is low (sets with coolant level sensor). Allow engine to cool down completely before proceeding with the following checks: a. Check coolant level and replenish if low. Look for possible coolant leakage points and repair if necessary. b. Check for obstructions to cooling airflow and correct as necessary. c. Check for a slipping fan belt, tighten if loose. d. Reset control and restart after locating and correcting problem. Contact your distributor if none of the above applies.
  • Green RUN lamp lights following engine Start-up.
    Fix: Indicates all engine systems are normal. No corrective action required.
  • Fault lamp lights but no fault exists.
    Fix: Engine gauges show oil pressure, engine temperature, and frequency (speed) are within normal limits. The monitor board or a sensor may be at fault. Contact your distributor for service.
  • Engine will not crank.
    Fix: Indicates possible fault with control or starting system. Check for the following conditions: a. Fault lamp on. Correct fault and reset control. b. Poor battery cable connections. Clean the battery cable terminals and tighten all connections. c. Discharged or defective battery. Recharge or replace the battery. d. Contact your distributor for assistance if none of the above applies.

Battery Connections installation

⚠ Ignition of explosive battery gases can cause severe personal injury. Do not smoke or allow arc-producing devices around the battery area.

⚠ Do not disconnect battery cables while the generator set is cranking or running.

  1. Use two 12-volt batteries for a normal installation.
  2. Connect the batteries in series: negative post of the first battery to the positive post of the second battery.
  3. Connect the negative (-) battery cable last to reduce the risk of arcing.
  4. If an automatic transfer switch is not used or has no built-in charge circuit, connect a float charger to the batteries.
Prestart Preparation Checklist installation
  1. Check ventilation and exhaust systems.
  2. Check all mechanical connections.
  3. Fill the coolant, lubrication and fuel systems.
  4. Prime the lubrication and fuel systems.
  5. Check the fuel system for leaks.
  6. Check the lubrication system for leaks.
  7. Verify all electrical connections are secure and wiring is complete.
  8. Check load cables are properly connected to transfer switch or circuit breaker panel.
Vibration Isolators Installation and Adjustment Procedure installation
  1. Place the isolators on the genset support structure.
  2. Shim or grout isolators so all isolator bases are within 0.25 inch (6 mm) elevation of each other; surface must be flat.
  3. Loosen the side snubber lock nuts so the top plate is free to move vertically and horizontally.
  4. Place the genset onto the isolators, aligning the skid's mounting with the threaded isolator hole.
  5. Insert the leveling bolt through the skid and into the isolator; lock nut threaded up toward the bolt head.
  6. Adjust the leveling bolt for a nominal clearance of 0.25 inch (6 mm) or greater between top plate and base.
  7. Adjust leveling bolts until the set is level and sufficient clearance remains; lock leveling bolt with lock nut.
  8. Snubber nuts may remain loose to provide better isolation.
Fuel System Priming maintenance

⚠ Diesel injection system tolerances are precise; keep fuel clean and free of water to avoid damage to injection pump and nozzles.

  1. Remove each fuel filter and fill with clean fuel.
  2. Put a light coat of fuel on the sealing gasket.
  3. Install and tighten by hand until the gasket just touches the filter head.
  4. Tighten the filter an additional one-half to three-fourths turn.
Lubrication System Fill and Prime maintenance

Tools: hand or motor driven priming pump with pressure gauge, torque wrench

  1. Remove oil inlet line from turbocharger housing; fill bearing housing with clean engine lubricating oil; replace line and secure.
  2. Fill crankcase to L (low) mark on dipstick.
  3. Connect a hand or motor driven priming pump with pressure gauge from clean oil source to the plug boss in the filter housing.
  4. Prime until a 30 psi (207 kPa) pressure is obtained.
  5. Disconnect wire from fuel solenoid valve.
  6. On the engine control panel, depress the RUN switch to crank the engine, maintaining 15 psi (103 kPa) oil priming pressure for 15 seconds at the filter head priming port.
  7. Stop engine cranking, remove external priming equipment, reinstall plug in filter housing and torque to 15 to 20 ft lb (20 to 27 N·m).
  8. Reconnect wire to fuel solenoid valve.
  9. Complete oil fill to H (high) mark on dipstick.
Initial Start and Checks operation

⚠ High AC voltages present hazard of severe personal injury or death; during a no-load test there should be no AC output current readings.

⚠ Inhalation of exhaust gases can result in severe personal injury or death; shut down and repair leaks immediately.

⚠ Leaking fuel creates fire or explosion hazard.

Tools: remote voltmeter (on sets without AC meters)

  1. Confirm that Field Circuit Breaker is at Reset position.
  2. Place the Lamp Test/Reset/Panel Lamp switch at LAMP TEST; all indicator lamps will illuminate; then place switch at PANEL LAMP.
  3. Place the Run/Stop/Remote switch at RUN; starter cranks and engine should start within a few seconds.
  4. Check oil pressure gauge reads 40 to 60 psi (275 to 414 kPa) at operating temperature.
  5. Check water temperature gauge reads 165° to 195°F (74° to 91°C).
  6. Check battery gauge reads approximately 24 to 28 volts while set is running.
  7. Check generator frequency meter is stable and reads nameplate rating (50 or 60 Hz).
  8. Check AC amperes: zero at no-load; all three phases approximately the same under load; no line current exceeds nameplate rating.
  9. Check line-to-line AC voltage at full load equals nameplate rating; adjust Voltage Adjust rheostat as necessary.
  10. Inspect the entire exhaust system visually and audibly for leaks.
  11. Inspect fuel supply lines, filters, and fittings for leaks; check flexible sections for cuts, cracks and abrasions.
  12. Stop the set by moving Run/Stop/Remote switch to STOP.
