Common problems

  • There is no electrical power even though the genset runs.
    Fix: A. Reset tripped circuit breakers. See Powering Equipment. b. Unless there is an automatic power transfer switch, plug the boat power cord into the genset power output receptacle (if so equipped) or turn the pontoon boat power selector switch to its genset position (if so equipped).
  • The remote battery condition meter indicates low voltage.
    Fix: A. Clean and tighten the positive (+) and negative (-) battery cable connections at the battery and the genset. b. Recharge the battery. Refer to the battery manufacturer's recommendations.
  • The genset keeps stalling or the circuit breaker keeps tripping.
    Fix: Try running with fewer appliances connected. See Powering Equipment.
  • The engine runs and then stops or surges.
    Fix: A. Check the fuel tank and fill if necessary. b. Check the engine oil level and add oil as necessary. Drain excess oil if the level is above the dipstick Full mark. c. Check and reset the carburetor preheater lever and altitude adjust knob. See Varying Weather and Altitude. d. Secure the spark plug leads on the spark plugs. e. Replace the spark plugs.
  • The engine fails to crank.
    Fix: A. Try starting at the genset rather than at the remote control. b. Replace fuse F1 on the control panel if it has blown. c. Clean and tighten the positive (+) and negative (-) battery cable connections at the battery and the genset. d. Recharge the battery. Refer to the battery manufacturer's recommendations.
  • The engine cranks slowly.
    Fix: A. Disconnect the air conditioner and other large loads. b. Clean and tighten the positive (+) and negative (-) battery cable connections at the battery and the genset. c. Recharge the battery. Refer to the battery manufacturer's recommendations. d. Change the engine oil to oil having the proper viscosity for the ambient temperature. See Table 1.
  • The engine cranks but fails to start.
    Fix: A. Check the fuel tank and fill if necessary. b. Open any closed fuel shut off valve. c. Check engine oil level and add oil as necessary. d. Replace fuse F2 (side of control panel) if it has blown. e. Service the air cleaner. f. Secure the spark plug leads on the spark plugs. g. Replace the spark plugs.
  • Black smoke exits the tailpipe.
    Fix: Service the air cleaner.
  • Weakness and Sleepiness
    Fix: IF YOU OR ANYONE ELSE EXPERIENCE ANY OF THESE SYMPTOMS, GET OUT INTO THE FRESH AIR IMMEDIATELY. If symptoms persist, seek medical attention. Shut down the unit and do not operate until it has been inspected and repaired.
  • Vomiting

  • UNIT RUNS THEN SURGES
    Cause: 1. Loose or worn spark plug leads. 2. Ignition coil, wiring, or control components defective. 3. Faulty spark plugs. 4. Governor defective. 5. Incorrect fuel mixture.
    Fix: 1. Check security of spark plug leads at spark plug and ignition coil. 2. Contact an Onan service center. 3. Remove and clean or replace faulty spark plugs. 4. Contact an Onan service center. 5. Contact an Onan service center.
  • UNIT RUNS THEN STOPS
    Cause: 1. Out of fuel. 2. Low oil level. 3. Excess oil.
    Fix: 1. Refill fuel tank. 2. Add oil if necessary. 3. Reduce engine oil level.
  • UNIT RUNS BUT SURGES
    Cause: 1. Loose or worn spark plug leads at spark plugs and ignition coil. 2. Ignition coil, wiring, or control components defective. 3. Faulty spark plugs. 4. Governor out of adjustment.

Automatic Choke Adjustment adjustment

Tools: vacuum source, drill rod, pliers

  1. Apply at least 100 mm mercury vacuum to choke breaker.
  2. Insert 8.6 mm drill rod between choke plate and throat.
  3. Bend link until choke plate lip touches drill rod.
  4. Use two pliers to bend link.
Breaker Point Replacement and Adjustment adjustment

⚠ Ignition adjustments must be made with engine static and cold

Tools: Hex head socket, Socket wrench, Allen head wrench, Flat thickness gauge

  1. Disconnect negative battery cable at battery terminal.
  2. Remove breaker box cover clip and lift off cover.
  3. Remove spark plugs; rotate rotor through-bolt clockwise until points open maximum.
  4. Remove condenser mounting screw and disconnect condenser and ignition leads.
  5. Remove breaker point mounting screws and lift out point assembly.
  6. Install new condenser and points in reverse order of removal.
  7. Adjust setscrew to specified point gap (0.016 in / 0.41 mm).
  8. Replace cover and spark plugs; reconnect negative battery cable.
Carburetor Fuel Mixture Adjustment adjustment

⚠ Forcing mixture screws tight damages needle and seat.

Tools: voltmeter, frequency meter, load bank

  1. Stop set and connect voltmeter, frequency meter, and load bank.
  2. Start set and apply full load; adjust governor speed nut to 59 (49) ±2 Hz.
  3. Remove main adjustment limiter cap; turn main screw inward until voltage or frequency drops.
  4. Turn outward until voltage or frequency drops again; locate highest point.
  5. Turn main adjustment screw out another 1/4 turn.
  6. Remove load and verify frequency within 62-63 Hz (51.5-52.5 Hz).
  7. Adjust idle screw for smoothest operation without hunting.
  8. Replace limiter caps with lever at mid position.
Carburetor Mixture Screw Adjustment (Gasoline) adjustment

⚠ Forcing mixture adjustment screws tight will damage needle and seat

Tools: Voltmeter, Frequency meter, Load bank, Screwdriver

  1. Stop set; connect voltmeter, frequency meter, and load bank.
  2. Start set and apply load; verify frequency within 59 (49) +/- 2 hertz.
  3. Turn main adjustment screw in, then out, to point of highest voltage and frequency.
  4. Turn main adjustment screw out an additional 1/4 turn.
  5. Remove load; verify frequency within 62 (51.5) +/- 1 hertz.
  6. Adjust idle adjustment screw for smoothest operation without hunting.
  7. Adjust throttle stop screw to obtain 55 (45) +/- 1 hertz.
Choke Adjustment adjustment
  1. Stop set and allow to cool.
  2. Remove plastic choke cover and loosen heating element cover screws.
  3. Rotate heating element until choke plate is halfway open.
  4. Rotate cover counterclockwise while tapping choke lever until it no longer bounces.
  5. Refer to Table 6-2 to determine degrees clockwise from reference.
  6. Rotate element cover as specified and tighten screws.
  7. Move choke lever to test free operation; install plastic cover.
Droop Adjustment adjustment
  1. Connect rated load; load watts = volts x amps (1.0 power factor).
  2. Check droop from no-load frequency.
  3. If droop more than 3 Hz (BGE) or 4 Hz (NHE), turn governor sensitivity screw one turn counterclockwise.
  4. Disconnect load and readjust governor speed screw to 62-63 Hz no-load if necessary.
  5. If droop less than 2 Hz (BGE) or 3 Hz (NHE), turn sensitivity screw one turn clockwise.
  6. Check governor response under 1/4, 1/2 and 3/4 rated loads.
Engine Speed Adjustments adjustment

⚠ Adjusting engine speed above equipment manufacturer's specification could cause equipment to operate at speeds in violation of Federal and State Standards for Safety.

⚠ Moving parts can cause severe personal injury or death. Take care when measuring engine speed with tachometer. Must be qualified mechanic.

Tools: Accurate tachometer

  1. Adjust only by qualified mechanic using accurate tachometer.
  2. Set low-idle and high-idle speeds to values in equipment Operator's Manual. If absent, adjust low-idle to 1400 RPM and high-idle to 3400 RPM.
  3. Start engine and move throttle lever to lowest speed position.
  4. Adjust low-idle speed stop screw on carburetor to obtain specified low-idle speed.
  5. For cable controlled engines: move throttle lever to highest speed position. Loosen high-idle speed stop plate clamping screw and rotate stop plate while holding throttle control arm against it until
  6. For lever controlled engines: adjust lever stop screw while holding throttle lever against it until specified high-idle speed is obtained.
  7. Check for full, smooth movement of throttle control arm between stop positions.
Frequency Adjustment adjustment

⚠ Disconnect voltage/frequency sensitive devices before adjustments.

  1. Set altitude adjust knob (gasoline only) to your altitude.
  2. Disconnect all loads and check no-load frequency.
  3. Turn governor speed adjusting screw to obtain 62-63 Hz (51.5-52.5 Hz for 50 Hz).
  4. Check output voltage; see Generator if not within 10 percent of rated.

  1. Set altitude adjust knob to altitude (gasoline only).
  2. Disconnect all loads and check zero amps.
  3. Adjust governor speed screw for 62-63 Hz no-load (51.5-52.5 Hz).
  4. Check output voltage within 10 percent of rated voltage.

  1. Run unit about 10 minutes under light load to reach operating temperature.
  2. Adjust carburetor mixture screws before making governor adjustments.
  3. Adjust governor linkage length and check for binding or looseness.
  4. At no load, adjust speed adjustment nut to specified frequency and voltage.
  5. Check frequency and voltage with load applied and with no load.
  6. Adjust sensitivity screw: counterclockwise increases sensitivity, clockwise decreases.
  7. Recheck speed setting and readjust if necessary.
Governor Rod Length Adjustment adjustment

⚠ Too much pressure on rod can result in faulty adjustment.

  1. Loosen lock nut at ball joint end of governor rod.
  2. Unsnap socket from ball.
  3. Push governor rod gently towards carburetor (full-throttle).
  4. Turn socket to lengthen or shorten rod so ball and socket line up.
  5. Snap socket back over ball.
  6. Tighten lock nut while holding socket square.
  7. Rotate governor arm and check for binding; repeat if necessary.
Idle Speed Stop Adjustment adjustment
  1. Start genset and warm up ten minutes under 1/2 to 3/4 rated load.
  2. Disconnect load and check for zero amps.
  3. Pull governor rod so throttle lever tang bears against idle speed stop screw.
  4. Adjust screw to obtain 54-56 Hz (44-46 Hz for 50 Hz).
  5. On LPG carburetors, stop screw has a locknut.
