Engine speed adjustment (CFP83 F-10, F-20, F-30) adjustment

⚠ The maximum engine speed should only be altered by a Cummins technician.

  1. Start the engine.
  2. Observe that the engine accelerates to the currently adjusted speed setpoint.
  3. Locate the threaded linkage rod on the fuel pump side of the engine.
  4. Loosen the locking nuts against the stops on the threaded rod.
  5. To increase speed, turn the bolt on the right side of the throttle bracket clockwise.
  6. To decrease speed, turn the bolt counter-clockwise.
  7. When the rated speed is correct, tighten the locking nut against the stop.
  8. Adjust the left-side threaded bolt for maximum speed if needed.
  9. Stop the engine and repeat until the desired speed is attained.
Overspeed test diagnostic
  1. From the User Interface screen press the MENU soft key.
  2. Press the OVERSPEED TEST soft key from the Settings Menu.
  3. Press the RUN soft button.
  4. When the dialog box appears, proceed with the test and select Yes.
  5. When the timer expires, ENGINE OVERSPEED flashing in red appears at the top of the FPDP screen.
  6. The engine will enter MANUAL mode until reset.
  7. Press the RESET/STOP switch on the FPDP to reset the fire pump drive engine.

  1. From the User Interface screen press the MENU soft key.
  2. Press the ENGINE SETUP soft key from the Settings menu.
  3. Enter password 806 in the Engine Setup Login screen.

Battery installation installation

⚠ Battery electrolyte (sulfuric acid) is highly caustic.

Cooling water supply installation installation

⚠ The cooling water supply must be immediately available when the engine is started.

  1. Provide a cooling water discharge line at the heat exchanger outlet and a supply line to the cooling water inlet.
  2. Check the pressure regulator setting on the cooling loop with water flowing through the heat exchanger.

  4. Measure the water flow using a container and elapsed time.
  5. Adjust both pressure regulators to provide flow at or above specifications.
Drive shaft installation installation

⚠ Do not use the engine lifting points for assembly!

  1. Ensure the engine and pump are correctly aligned.
  2. Verify engine position centered on frame side to side within +/- .76 mm (.03 in).
  3. Align engine center line to pump center line within +/- .76 mm (.03 in).
  4. Ensure pump center line to engine crankshaft center line (vertical) is 2 degrees +/- 1 degree.
  5. Ensure drive shaft mounting flanges are parallel.
  6. Lubricate the grease fittings on the drive shaft universal joint.
  7. Check engine is installed per pump manufacturer's specifications.
Fuel supply installation installation

⚠ Do not use copper or galvanized pipe for the fuel return or supply lines.

⚠ Do not mix gasoline, alcohol, gasohol, ethanol, or methanol with diesel fuel.

Tools: Container for contaminated fuel

  1. Install an elevated no. 2 diesel fuel tank or equivalent compatible with ASTM no. 2 diesel specifications.
  2. Size the fuel tank for the maximum expected full-load operation period.
  3. Install a fuel return line routed to the bottom of the fuel tank.
  4. Install a fuel supply line to the fire pump drive engine.
  5. Open the fuel filter/water separator drain and drain until no water is present.
Coolant system preparation maintenance

⚠ Do not remove the pressure/fill cap from a hot engine. Wait until coolant temperature is below 50 C (122 F).

Tools: Refractometer

  1. Inspect the engine coolant hoses and hose clamps for proper installation and water tightness.
  2. Ensure the engine coolant heater maintains coolant temperature of 49 C (120 F) or above.
  3. Ensure coolant is present in the coolant heater before plugging into a dedicated circuit.
  4. Inspect the heat exchanger weekly for external damage and contamination.
  5. Add coolant if necessary: with sight gauge, keep level visible at center; without, fill to bottom of fill neck.
  6. Re-install the pressure/fill cap.
Cooling system drain and flush (heat exchanger) maintenance

⚠ Coolant is toxic. Avoid prolonged and repeated skin contact with used antifreeze.

⚠ Never use a sealing additive to stop leaks in the cooling system.

Tools: Container (at least 57 liters/15 gallons), Filter wrench

  1. Disconnect both batteries at their terminals; remove the negative (-) cable first.
  2. Press down, unscrew, and remove the coolant expansion tank pressure/fill cap.
  3. Disconnect the engine coolant heater power supply before draining.
  4. Place a container holding at least 57 liters (15 gallons) under the coolant drain valve.
  5. Ensure the coolant filter shut-off valves are OPEN.
  6. Open the drain petcock on the lower coolant tube and drain the coolant.
  7. Move the container under the engine coolant heater, disconnect a heater coolant hose, and drain the heater.
  8. Flush with clean fresh water or heavy-duty heat exchanger cleaner.
  9. Remove the water coolant filter with a filter wrench, clean the housing, coat the new gasket with 15W-40 oil, and install; tighten an additional 1/4 turn.
  10. Reconnect the heater coolant hose and close the drain petcock.
  11. Fill the coolant tanks with 50% water and 50% ethylene-glycol or propylene-glycol antifreeze.
  12. Check the pressure/fill cap condition and re-install.
  13. Re-install the heater wiring.
  14. Reinstall the battery cables; attach the negative (-) battery cable last.
  15. Operate the engine until it reaches 82 C (180 F) and check for coolant leaks.
Cooling water strainer cleaning maintenance
  1. To clean the normal line strainer, ensure the normal line valves are closed and the bypass line valves are open.
  2. To clean the bypass line strainer, ensure the bypass line valves are closed and the normal line valves are open.
  3. Remove the plug.
  4. Inspect and remove any debris.
  5. Install the strainer plugs.
  6. Open the normal line valves and close the bypass line valves for normal operation.
Engine oil and filter change maintenance

⚠ If no oil pressure is noted within fifteen seconds after the engine is started, shut down the engine.

Tools: Filter wrench, Container

  1. Operate the engine until coolant temperature reaches 70 C (158 F); shut the engine off.
  2. Place an appropriate container under the oil pan drain plug.
  3. Remove the oil drain plug and drain the oil immediately.
  4. Clean the area around the oil filter canister; use a filter wrench to remove the filter.
  5. Remove and discard the O-ring seal if it remained on the mounting flange; clean the flange.
  6. Apply a light film of 15W-40 lubricating oil to the replacement filter gasket.
  7. Fill the oil filter with a high-quality 15W-40 multi-viscosity oil such as Premium Blue.
  8. Center the filter ring and screw on until the gasket is snug, then tighten an additional 1/4 turn.
  9. Check and clean the oil pan drain plug threads; install the plug and torque per tables.
  10. Fill the engine to the proper level with clean 15W-40 oil.
  11. Restart the engine and let it run approximately one to two minutes.
  12. Stop the engine and wait approximately fifteen minutes for oil to drain back.
  13. Check the oil level and add oil to the H mark on the dipstick.
Fuel filter change maintenance

⚠ Do not open the fuel filter/water separator drain valve or dismantle the fuel lines on the high-pressure fuel system with the engine running.

⚠ If the engine does not start after three attempts, check the fuel supply system.

Tools: Filter wrench

  1. Shut off the engine.
  2. Close any fuel valves to prevent fuel from draining or siphoning.
  3. Clean the area around the fuel filter or fuel/water separator heads.
  4. Remove the spent filter canisters using a filter wrench.
  5. Clean the filter mounting head surfaces and ensure mating gasket surfaces are clean.
  6. Lubricate the gasket seals with clean SAE 15W-40 lubricating oil.
  7. Center the filter ring on the threaded mounting nipple; screw on until the gasket is snug, then tighten an additional 1/4 turn.
  8. Open the fuel supply valves.
  9. Press the CRANK BATT A or CRANK BATT B button to start the engine and allow fuel to flow.
  10. Depress the contactor switch for up to fifteen seconds or until the engine starts.
