Procedures

12
Adjusting Alternator and Water Pump Drive Belt Tension adjustment

⚠ Apply force against stator laminations between alternator end frame, not against the end frame.

Tools: Borroughs Tension Gauge BT-33-74

  1. Loosen alternator adjusting brace capscrew and mounting screw.
  2. Move alternator in or out to obtain proper belt tension.
  3. Check tension using a Borroughs Tension Gauge BT-33-74 or equivalent.
  4. Retighten the capscrew.
Fan and Water Pump Belt Replacement and Adjustment adjustment

Tools: Burroughs Tension Gauge (BT-33-72C) or equivalent

  1. Remove battery charging generator drive belt.
  2. Loosen locknut at rear of fan hub spindle.
  3. Lower the hub by turning the adjustment screw counterclockwise.
  4. Remove both old belts and inspect; replace both if either is defective.
  5. Position new belts on pulley grooves.
  6. Raise hub and adjust tension by turning the adjustment screw clockwise.
  7. Tighten the spindle locknut securely.
  8. Install and adjust the battery charging generator drive belt.
Testing and Adjusting Fuel Injection Nozzle adjustment

⚠ Keep hands away from nozzle tip when popping a nozzle; atomized fuel can penetrate skin and cause blood poisoning.

Tools: Nozzle tester with accurate pressure gauge, Nozzle Hole Cleaning Wire and pin vise

  1. Bolt or clamp nozzle tester base to work bench.
  2. Open tester valve, loosen filler cap, operate handle until fuel flows, then close valve.
  3. Connect nozzle holder to tester fuel line and place spray collector under nozzle.
  4. Operate handle with quick strokes and observe opening pressure on gauge.
  5. Loosen adjusting screw locknut; turn pressure adjusting screw IN to increase, OUT to decrease opening pressure.
  6. When specified pressure is obtained, hold adjusting screw and tighten locknut to 60 lb-ft (81 Nm).
  7. Dry nozzle tip and operate handle slowly to about 200 psi below opening pressure; observe for leakage.
  8. Operate handle at about 100 strokes per minute and observe the 4-hole spray pattern.
Valve Lash Adjustment adjustment

⚠ Ensure adjusting screws are turned upward enough after mechanical work so pistons cannot strike valves when cranking.

Tools: 0.018 in feeler gauge

  1. Operate engine to minimum 160 F (344 K) coolant temperature, then stop engine.
  2. Clean valve rocker covers and surrounding area.
  3. Remove breather tube upper section, rocker cover nuts, sealing washers and covers.
  4. Crank engine until No. 6 exhaust valve is almost closed and intake valve starts to open.
  5. Check and adjust intake and exhaust valve lash for No. 1 cylinder to 0.018 in.
  6. Loosen locknut; turn adjusting screw clockwise to decrease or counterclockwise to increase clearance; tighten locknut.
  7. Following firing order 1-5-3-6-2-4, position each cylinder in turn and adjust its valves (5, 3, 6, 2, 4).
  8. Recheck lash after tightening each locknut.
Testing Thermostats diagnostic

⚠ Check water temperature with a reliable thermometer. Do not overheat.

Tools: Reliable thermometer

  1. Suspend thermostat in a container of clean water, fully immersed but not touching sides or bottom.
  2. Heat water gradually and stir so heat is evenly distributed.
  3. Observe thermostat as water temperature increases.
  4. Thermostat should begin to open between 175 to 182 F and be fully open at 202 F.
  5. Travel between open and closed positions must be a minimum of 0.266 in.
  6. If it does not operate within limits it must be replaced.
Thermostat Testing diagnostic

Tools: Reliable thermometer, Container

  1. Suspend thermostat in clean water, fully immersed but not touching bottom.
  2. Gradually heat water and check temperature with a reliable thermometer.
  3. Note temperature at which thermostat starts to open and at which it is fully open.
  4. Travel between open and closed must be minimum 0.310 in (7.87 mm).
  5. Replace thermostats that do not operate within limits; they are not adjustable.
Air Cleaner Cartridge Replacement and Service maintenance

⚠ Do not clean or reuse a dirty cartridge. Do not cover the precleaner face.

  1. Loosen wing/nuts and clamps; remove moisture eliminator or precleaner after removing its flexible hose.
  2. Loosen all four cartridge corners by pulling straight out; remove and discard cartridge.
  3. Inspect dirty cartridge for soot or oil to detect exhaust leaks or breather fumes.
  4. Remove all foreign material from inside the housing.
  5. Install new cartridge; press all edges and corners firmly against the sealing flange.
  6. Clean moisture eliminator or precleaner if necessary.
  7. Install moisture eliminator (drain holes down) or precleaner (dust bin down).
  8. Tighten clamp fasteners in diagonal sequence (hex nut type to 72 lb-in).
  9. Install flexible hose over precleaner elbow and tighten clamp.
  10. Reset service indicator by pressing reset button.
Air Cleaner Element Service - Donaldson Single Element Type maintenance

⚠ Be sure dust cup arrows point up. Do not use oil in dust cup.

⚠ Air pressure at nozzle must not exceed 100 psi when dry cleaning element.

  1. Clean exterior of air cleaner and surrounding area.
  2. Loosen clamp assembly and remove dust cup; loosen wing nut and remove baffle.
  3. Empty and clean dust cup and baffle daily.
  4. Remove foreign material from around filter element.
  5. Assemble baffle to dust cup and tighten wing nut.
  6. Position dust cup on body with arrows up and tighten clamp securely.
  7. Replace filter element when red signal covers exposed window of service indicator.
  8. Reset service indicator by pressing reset button.
Bypass Oil Filter Element Replacement maintenance
  1. Clean filter cover and surrounding area; open drain cock and drain filter.

⚠ Always use Allis-Chalmers replacement filters.

  1. Operate engine until coolant at minimum operating temperature; remove oil pan drain plug and drain oil.
  2. Clean filters and surrounding area.
  3. Unscrew and discard both full-flow filters.
  4. Lubricate gaskets of replacement filters; screw on by hand until gasket contacts base, then tighten one half turn more.
  5. Install drain plug and fill oil pan to FULL mark on dipstick.
  6. Crank engine 15 seconds without starting to fill filters.
  7. Start engine and run about 5 minutes; check for leaks.
  8. Stop engine, allow oil to drain back, and recheck level.
Coolant Filter/Conditioner Element Replacement maintenance

⚠ Do not use soluble oil or other conditioners in a system equipped with a coolant filter.

  1. Thoroughly clean base and surrounding area.
  2. Close coolant inlet and outlet shutoff valves.
  3. Remove exhausted spin-on element and discard.
  4. Lubricate gasket with a thin film of oil.
  5. Install element until gasket contacts base of mounting housing.
  6. Hand tighten 1/2 turn more.
  7. Open inlet and outlet shutoff valves.
  8. Operate engine and check for leaks.
Draining the Cooling System maintenance

⚠ When draining in freezing weather, make certain coolant flows freely from all drain cocks and the system drains completely.

  1. Ensure engine is level for complete draining.
  2. Remove radiator or expansion tank cap.
  3. Open vent cocks in thermostat housing cover.
  4. Open drain cocks on right-hand side of cylinder block.
  5. Open drain cock at bottom of timing gear housing.
  6. Open drain cock at bottom of radiator if applicable.
