Engine vs Generator End vs Genset: What's the Difference?
Short answer: A "genset" (generator set) is an assembled package of three separate products: the engine (burns fuel to produce mechanical rotation), the generator end — also called the alternator (converts that rotation into electricity), and a controller (starts, stops, monitors, and protects the whole unit). The company whose name is on the genset — Kohler, Generac, FG Wilson, Cummins/Onan — is often the packager, not necessarily the maker of the engine or the alternator inside it. That's why a single machine can legitimately carry three different brand names, and why it has three separate data plates.
This isn't a technicality — it's exactly why generator identification gets confusing, and why this site keeps engine, alternator, and genset data in three separate tables rather than one. In our own catalog of 16,927 documented generator sets, 5,323 of them use an engine from a different company than the one whose name is on the genset — that's the normal case, not the exception.
What is the "generator end"?
The generator end is the part that actually makes electricity. It's a rotating electrical machine — a rotor spinning inside a stator — that the engine turns via a direct coupling or a drive belt. Technically it's called an alternator (it produces alternating current), and that's the term used on spec sheets and in our own data, but "generator end" is the common shop-floor name, used to distinguish it from the "engine end" on the same skid.
The generator end has its own rating, separate from the engine's: kW/kVA output, voltage, phase, frequency, and number of poles. It has its own manufacturer, model number, and serial number — stamped on its own data plate, mounted on the alternator housing, not the engine block.

None of these companies build engines. They exist to make the electricity-producing half of a genset, sold to genset packagers and engine builders alike — which is exactly why you'll find a Stamford or Leroy-Somer alternator bolted to gensets from a dozen different genset brands.
What is the "engine end"?
The engine end is the internal combustion engine — diesel, gasoline, propane, or natural gas — that supplies the mechanical rotation the generator end converts into electricity. Its rating is mechanical (horsepower or kW at a given RPM), not electrical, and it has its own manufacturer, model, and serial number stamped on its own plate, usually on the block or valve cover.
Engine speed and output frequency are directly linked: a 4-pole alternator needs the engine spinning at exactly 1800 RPM to produce a clean 60 Hz, or 1500 RPM for 50 Hz. Why does my generator have three different brand names on it?
Because it's a three-part assembly, and the company that builds and sells the complete genset frequently buys the engine and the alternator from specialist manufacturers rather than building them in-house. Two real examples from our own catalog:

Neither of these is unusual — some genset makers (Kohler, Generac, Cummins/Onan) build their own engines for at least part of their lineup, which makes them what's sometimes called a "dual-role" manufacturer; others (FG Wilson, Olympian, SDMO) assemble complete units almost entirely from third-party engines and alternators. Either way, the genset's own brand is not a reliable guide to who made the parts inside it — that's a real, common source of confusion, and part of why generator part lookups fail when someone searches only the genset brand name.

A genset legitimately carries three separate data plates, each identifying a different product:

Is the generator end the same as the alternator? Yes. "Generator end" is the informal name for the alternator — the rotating electrical machine that produces power. They're used interchangeably; "alternator" is the term you'll see on spec sheets and manufacturer data.
How do I know if the problem is the engine or the generator end? If the engine runs (starts, idles, holds RPM) but you get no or abnormal electrical output, the problem is almost always in the generator end or its excitation/voltage-regulation system, not the engine. If the engine won't start, won't hold speed, or shuts down, that's an engine-side (or governor) problem. Checking output at the generator end's own terminals, independent of any load, is the standard first diagnostic step.
Why doesn't my generator's brand match its engine's brand? Because most genset manufacturers are packagers, not full-line engine builders. They design and build the enclosure, fuel system, wiring, and controls, then source a proven engine and alternator from specialist manufacturers. The genset brand identifies who assembled and warranties the complete unit — not who built every component inside it.
Where do I find my generator's real model number?
